Biography
Brenton Drechsler (he/him) is an emerging Australian visual artist. He was born in Campbelltown, South Australia, on Kaurna Country. From 2006 to 2010 he studied at TAFE SA, completing an Advanced Diploma in Fashion Design and Technology. In his graduating year he was awarded the TAFE SA Student of the Year and went on to work as a self employed fashion designer until 2015.
He completed a Bachelor of Visual Art at Adelaide Central School of Art in 2022, receiving the Hill Smith Art Advisory Award for Painting and Drawing. In 2023 he undertook an Honours year at the same institution and graduated with First Class Honours.
Drechsler’s practice investigates opacity, personal narrative, and orientation through the lens of queer subjectivity. He also examines the experience of not belonging to place through the physical and expressive qualities of paint. His works are held in collections in Australia and overseas, and he has been a finalist in several prizes in 2024 and 2025, including the John Glover Art Prize, The Lester Portrait Prize, the Lethbridge Landscape Prize, and the National Emerging Art Prize on two occasions.
In October, 2025 Drechsler was officially represented by Michael Reid Southern Highlands and Michael Reid Northern Beaches.
